Volunteering is an important part of our project, helping visitors experience the great maritime heritage of the city.

Volunteer for Hull Maritime!

We're looking for enthusiastic people to join us in bringing Hull's maritime story to life.

There is a range of exciting volunteering opportunities, from delivering engaging guided tours to helping conserve historic maritime artefacts and welcoming visitors to world‑class heritage venues including:

  •  Maritime Museum - deliver guided tours, family activities and daily visitor welcome
  • Arctic Corsair - meet and welcome visitors, lead guided tours of the ship and support school visits
  • Spurn Lightship - welcome visitors and share knowledge, experience and passion

No previous experience of volunteering is needed as all volunteers receive full training, a uniform and ongoing support to help them thrive in their role. You can choose flexible shifts of one to four hours, at times that suit you.

Our volunteering programme is delivered in partnership with HEY! Volunteering, so you’ll be directed through their platform to apply and sign up.

Once part of HEY! Volunteering, you’ll also gain access to a wide variety of additional opportunities across the city and region - plus exclusive free masterclasses should you wish to get involved even further.

Find out more about HEY! Volunteering and to apply, visit here.

Why volunteer?

Do you, or someone close to you, work at sea? Have memories, skills or stories from Hull's rich maritime past?

Volunteering is a chance to:

  • Share your experiences, memories and knowledge
  • Learn new skills
  • Meet new people
  • Be part of preserving Hull's maritime heritage

Cliff Gledhill, a volunteer, said: “The great thing about being a volunteer is the satisfaction of talking to different people, helping them, sharing views and knowledge.”

David Elgey who volunteers for Hull Maritime, said: “I became a volunteer as I came from a barge family and grew up with that background. The maritime side of Hull is in my blood, this pride inspired me to share my city's maritime heritage with visitors.”
