20th September 2024

Local residents are being offered a unique opportunity to discover the hidden history of the South Blockhouse through a series of free, hands-on art and craft workshops.

These creative sessions are part of a wider community engagement initiative funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, aimed at deepening public involvement with Hull’s rich maritime history.

Located beneath a parking area next to The Deep, on the east bank of the River Hull, the South Blockhouse was one of the fortifications ordered by Henry VIII between 1541-43. This historically significant site is a key part of Hull’s maritime heritage, and the upcoming workshops will bring its story to life for the local community.

Hull Maritime has commissioned two local groups, We Made This Hull and Square Peg Hull, to lead a series of creative workshops designed to explore the South Blockhouse’s history and cultural significance.

Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, praised the initiative and said: "The South Blockhouse is a fascinating part of Hull's maritime history, and these creative workshops offer a wonderful opportunity for residents to connect with the past in a hands-on way. By involving the community through arts and crafts, we're not only raising awareness of this historic site but also fostering local pride and engagement. I encourage everyone to take part and celebrate this important chapter of Hull’s heritage."

Craft Workshops by We Made This Hull

We Made This Hull will offer craft-based workshops in East Hull, providing participants with the opportunity to create air-dry clay models, decorate soap scrimshaw, and design South Blockhouse-themed coasters. These sessions are open to all skill levels and aim to engage the local community with the story of this historic landmark in a fun and accessible way.

Fiona from We Made This Hull shared her excitement and said: "We are thrilled to be part of the South Blockhouse Project. Through these workshops, we are transforming local history into fun and engaging craft activities, bringing awareness to a piece of history that’s right on our doorstep!"
