Mires Beck is Yorkshire’s leading supplier of wildflowers and supplies wildflowers and trees to several of the UK’s most iconic heritage sites, including 10 National Trust properties and four English Heritage locations such as Chatsworth House, Harewood House, Fountains Abbey, and Beningbrough Hall and Gardens.
Hull Maritime has joined forces with them and 1,280 wildflowers are being planted in a new woodland area within Queens Gardens.

Mires Beck Nursery has been operating as a registered charity for more than 30 years and is set within 14 acres of conservation land.
The nursery is not only known for its horticultural expertise - growing over 50,000 wildflowers and 420,000 trees annually - but also for its vital role as a therapeutic environment for adults with learning and physical disabilities.
The nursery provides a safe, inclusive space where over 100 service users each week are given meaningful opportunities to learn, grow, and connect with nature.

The new wildflower area in Queens Gardens, previously dominated by ornamental planting and mown grass, will become a more natural space, with a more diverse range of native wildflower species offering crucial habitat for local wildlife. The planting will include a selection of shade-loving native wildflowers such as foxgloves, primroses, bluebells, and wood avens - all of which have been lovingly grown and prepared by service users at Mires Beck.
Some of the adults, aged between 18 and 60, have been part of the process of sowing, growing, and conserving the wildflowers that are being planted in the gardens. This hands-on involvement not only nurtures confidence and horticultural skills but also reinforces the nursery’s mission to provide enriching experiences for those it supports.

There are around eight teams of service users, each attending between one and five days a week and take part in a real workplace environment, making a difference, gain confidence, independance and a deep send of purpose.
The nursery is also open to the general public, Monday to Sunday, 10am - 4pm. For more information visit here.
