Hull Maritime have so far funded 46 creative taster workshops giving people the chance to learn something new and engage with the Hull Maritime project in creative ways.
Square Peg creative directors, Jemma and Rachel recently visited Age UK’s Bee Social and Feel Good Thursdays social groups to give people the chance to try out some artistic techniques, all of course with a maritime theme.
The Feel Good Thursdays group at Florence Nightingale Court, Barrington Avenue created beautiful collages of birds found around the Humber Estuary. In this workshop the group used birds from the Humber Estuary that are in decline as their starting points. They then used mixed media to create their brightly coloured designs and bring the birds to life through collage.
The Bee Social group at Springhead Golf Club, Willerby Road had a go at Gyotaku fish printing. Square Peg talked to the group about this traditional Japanese method of printing which would have been used by fisherfolk as a technique to record the size and species of their catch.
In the workshop, the group used soy inks, mulberry paper and a real plaice. To create the Gyotaku prints, the fish was carefully inked with a brush, aiming to keep surfaces clean and reduce inky fingerprints.
The paper was then placed on the top and smoothed over all the textures of the fish and peeled off. The result were some beautiful and delicate prints!
