The fascinating story of Ravenser Odd, a lost town once built on an island at the mouth of the Humber, is now embarking on a tour across North East Lincolnshire.
The exhibition, Ravenser Odd: The Sunken Island of the Humber, delves into the history and folklore of the short-lived medieval town, which rose to wealth before being accused of piracy and stealing trade from its neighbours along the Humber.
The tour kicked off in September 2024 at Spurn Discovery Centre and made its way to Withernsea Library, where it was displayed until December. The response from the public has been overwhelmingly positive, with many visitors calling the exhibition "fascinating and informative."
In 2025, the exhibition will be on display at Cleethorpes Library from Wednesday, 5 March, to Monday, 31 March, during normal opening hours. Following this, it will move to Grimsby Library, where it will be open from Wednesday, 2 April, to Wednesday, 30 April.
In addition to the exhibition, Square Peg Hull will host free creative workshops that invite people to explore Ravenser Odd in interactive and fun ways. Jemma from Square Peg said, "We’ve had a great time delivering workshops with a mix of participants—some who knew about Ravenser Odd, and others who didn’t. It's been a wonderful opportunity to discuss the stories and the creative work on display. We’re always excited to see how people interpret these stories into visuals."
Flag-making workshops inspired by Ravenser Odd will be held at Cleethorpes Library on 12 March, 2-4pm and at Grimsby Library on 12 April, 10am-1pm. These sessions are open to all and require no prior booking, making them ideal for both children and adults.
This project is funded by the Higher Education Innovation Fund at the University of Sussex. The exhibition and associated activities are based on research by Professor. Emily Robinson (University of Sussex) and Dr. Kathryn Maude (The National Archives), with support from Hull Maritime and Square Peg Hull.
