A new printed zine and online archive have been created in response to Hull’s nationally significant monument, the South Blockhouse.
Using the unique cloverleaf architecture of the South Blockhouse as a starting point, the CloverLore group, led by local artist-facilitator Lauren Saunders, researched the site and its history, uncovering fascinating stories.
The group went on to respond creatively in their own way, sharing and developing skills during the project, including crafting, solar dyeing, basic foraging and herbalism, and archival research skills.
To celebrate the project and share the group’s findings a printed zine and online archive have been produced. Copies of the CloverLore zine are now available for download online and for collection from various cultural and heritage venues across the city.
CloverLore was a six-week collaborative and creative exploration of the historic, natural, and cultural heritage of the South Blockhouse, and was funded by the Hull Maritime Creative Communities Grant in autumn 2024.
The South Blockhouse, constructed on the orders of Henry VIII between 1541-1543, was part of a scheme of defences on the east bank of the River Hull. Archaeological digs and archival materials reveal that the South Blockhouse had a unique cloverleaf design with curved walls 4.6m thick to deflect cannon balls and enemy fire

This new zine and archive will showcase their findings inspired by the monument’s story in a new and creative way.”
Lauren Saunders, the artist-facilitator of CloverLore, said: "This project has been a truly enriching experience, allowing participants to dive deep into the rich history of the South Blockhouse and express their creativity in unique ways. CloverLore has fostered a sense of community and curiosity, and we're thrilled to share our discoveries with the wider public."
