Hull Maritime’s renowned guided maritime tours have been Highly Commended at the prestigious Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Award (REYTA) in the competitive ‘Remarkable Experience of the Year’ category.
The winners were announced at a grand ceremony held on Thursday 14 November 2024, at Bridlington Spa, where Hull Maritime were presented with the High Commended accolade and coming a close second to winners, Cow Cuddling – Dumble Farm.
The guided tours, which explore Hull’s rich maritime history, have become a favourite among both locals and visitors, offering a deep dive into the city’s past, present, and future. Led by a dedicated team of 17 accredited White Badge tour guides, these tours ensure a top-tier experience, combining historical insight with engaging storytelling.
Starting in the Museum Quarter gardens, the tours provide a comprehensive exploration of Hull’s maritime heritage. Participants are taken on a journey that lasts up to 2 ½ hours, featuring key landmarks such as the future site of the Arctic Corsair at North End Shipyard, Queens Gardens, the exterior of the Maritime Museum, and the new home of the Spurn Lightship in Hull Marina. Additional highlights include stops at Blaydes House, Trinity House, and Hull Marina. For those with limited time, a shorter walk is available every Sunday at 1:30 pm.
The popularity of these tours soared in 2023, with a remarkable 50 per cent increase in visitors, demonstrating their growing appeal. The success for 2024 continued with a 16 per cent increase on visitors taking part on a walk.
Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said: "Being Highly Commended for this award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, who bring Hull's maritime history to life for everyone who joins these tours. Their passion and knowledge have created an unforgettable experience that truly resonates with our visitors."
John Tindall who accepted the award on behalf of the volunteers, said: “All the accreditation efforts undertaken have been amplified by the public’s positive reaction to the tours.
“A REYTA recognition is icing on the cake.”
Volunteer guide, Rachael added: "The whole team has worked hard with knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment to create a wonderful experience for both visitors, and local people.
“It's a great honour and much appreciated to be recognised for our fantastic achievement. Thank you very much."
The guided walks are set to resume on Saturday 15 February 2025, with volunteers currently working behind the scenes to enhance the experience even further. Tours will take place every Thursday and Saturday at 10.30am, and on Sundays at 11.30am and 1.30pm.
