Hull Maritime has launched a second round of its Community Grant Scheme.

The scheme is designed to engage residents by exploring Hull’s maritime story through a project delivered by a community group or freelancer.

The second round of grants are available in three different themes: environment, wellbeing, and heritage. Micro grants of up to £500 and small grants of up to £2,000 will be awarded to successful groups and individuals for activities that will engage with our local communities.

Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said: “The first round of projects was a great success and engaged with communities across the city.

“The council is encouraging organisations and freelancers to apply for a maritime community grant and join forces with Hull Maritime, the project transforming our maritime treasures.

“This grant scheme aims to connect and engage with local communities in a variety of creative ways and raising awareness of our maritime heritage at the same time.”

The first round awarded almost £8,000 in grants to local projects, they included an art eco project creating a fish sculpture from recycled litter from the river Hull, as well as events and activities delivered by the Norland Crew, Beverley Barge Preservation Society and the Hull Visual Choir at The Deep. A grant was also awarded to St. Andrews Dock Heritage Park Action Group for three information boards to accompany the Lost Trawlermen’s Memorial on St Andrews Quay.

Hull Independent Merchant Navy Association, who received funding to support a reunion trip to Scarborough, told Hull Maritime what it meant to receive a community grant: “Groups like the Hull I.M.N.A. provide a life-line especially for our elderly, isolated and most vulnerable members…the highlights were just seeing everyone enjoying the afternoon, the banter of people completely at ease and relaxed in familiar company, with an excellent buffet and entertainment provided.”

Applications will open on Monday 14 November. The deadline for applications is Friday 6 January 2023.
