The Hull Maritime Foundation is proud to announce it has secured a £30,000 grant from The Foyle Foundation to support the creation of a dynamic new learning programme at the North End Shipyard’s state-of-the-art visitor centre.

This funding will help bring to life an immersive educational experience that celebrates Hull’s rich maritime heritage. The new centre, built to rigorous Passivhaus standards, is one of the most energy-efficient cultural buildings in the UK. It is expected to welcome around 135,000 visitors annually, with a strong focus on engaging school pupils and young learners.

A hub for maritime learning

The visitor centre will serve as a vibrant hub for maritime education, offering hands-on, interactive exhibits that explore the lives of Hull’s trawlermen and the city’s deep-rooted connection to the sea. Visitors will also discover the historical significance of nearby Queens Gardens and Hull’s medieval High Street.

Thanks to The Foyle Foundation’s support, the education space will be fitted with exciting interactive tools, including:

  • A water tank for testing boat designs
  • Wind blowers to simulate sea conditions
  • A fish-gutting display to demonstrate traditional fishing practices

These features are designed to make STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths) learning both fun and memorable.

Digital resources for schools

In addition to the physical exhibits, the funding will enable the development of a comprehensive suite of online learning materials tailored for Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 4 pupils. These resources will support classroom learning and school visits, helping students explore Hull’s maritime industries, the lives of seafarers, and the city’s historic landmarks.

Building on a strong partnership

This is the second major grant from The Foyle Foundation to the Hull Maritime Foundation. In 2023, the Foundation awarded £250,000 to support the creation of the North End Shipyard visitor centre.

David Atkinson, Chair of Hull Maritime Foundation, said: “Hull Maritime Foundation is extremely grateful to The Foyle Foundation for extending their project funding towards the education facilities and programme at the North End Shipyard. This new visitor attraction will be a great addition to the city’s cultural offer that celebrates the unique impact of fishing and maritime industry in Hull.”

Part of a city-wide maritime transformation

The North End Shipyard visitor centre is a key part of the wider Hull Maritime project – a major regeneration initiative funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Hull City Council. The project will transform six key maritime sites across the city, including:

  • The restoration of the Arctic Corsair and Spurn Lightship
  • The regeneration of Queens Gardens
  • The refurbishment of the Hull Maritime Museum and Dock Office Chambers

Together, these efforts aim to create a world-class maritime experience that honours Hull’s seafaring legacy and inspires future generations.
