31st March 2025

Hull City Council has today, Monday 31 March, appointed Eric Wright Civil Engineering to deliver significant upgrades to High Street in Hull.

These improvements are made possible with funding from National Highways and Hull City Council.

Eric Wright Civil Engineering will be responsible for delivering a range of works on High Street to improve connectivity for both pedestrians and motorists. The improvements aim to create a safer and more welcoming environment for pedestrians walking between the Old Town and Fruit Market.

As a significant point along the Hull Maritime trail, enhanced interpretation features will also illuminate the street's rich maritime history.

These improvements to High Street are part of a broader scheme aimed at delivering extensive enhancements to Humber Dock Street, Princes Dock Street, and High Street, including:

  • Creating a high-quality public realm for pedestrians and cyclists, aligned with current standards, best practices, and consistent with ongoing investment in the city centre.
  • Establishing safe, welcoming, and flexible public spaces that attract visitors, extend dwell time, and support a range of public events.
  • Improving heritage interpretation, wayfinding, and incorporating public art.
  • Reducing street clutter and introducing improved street furniture, including seating, lighting, and incidental play.
  • Enhancing signage, pedestrian information displays, and wayfinding.

Gillian Osgerby, Hull City Council’s interim assistant director of major projects and infrastructure, said: "Hull City Council is proud to support the improvements to High Street as part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the urban environment and create a more vibrant, accessible, and attractive city centre. These enhancements will not only benefit residents and visitors but also contribute to the city's economic growth and cultural vitality."

The appointment of Eric Wright Civil Engineering marks a significant step forward in the revitalisation of High Street and its surroundings. These enhancements will create a vibrant and inviting environment for residents and visitors alike, contributing to the ongoing transformation of Hull's city centre.

Work is expected to get underway immediately and is expected to be complete late summer 2025. These works are being delivered at this time due to significant funding received from National Highways and their funding requirements.
