The penultimate edition of the popular Maritime Tales comic series, titled “Removing the (G)rime of These Ancient Mariners”, is now available.

In this latest adventure, readers join dynamic duo Jacob Meaux and Lily Blades as they embark on a special behind-the-scenes visit to Hull’s Maritime Museum. As curators, volunteers, interpretation designers and other specialists prepare objects for future displays, Lily and Jacob offer a unique glimpse into the museum’s transformation.

The Maritime Tales series brings Hull’s rich maritime history to life through captivating storytelling and vibrant illustrations, appealing to both young readers and adults alike. Previous editions have featured encounters with mythical sea creatures such as the Kraken and Sirens, as well as tales from the South Blockhouse and the lost town of Ravenser Odd.

Local illustrator and comic book artist Gareth Sleightholme, whose distinctive style has defined the series, shared his thoughts on the latest volume, he said: "This is the fifth Lily & Jacob/Maritime Tales comic in the series I've had the pleasure to produce.

“It's been a real joy going on the journey with these two inquisitive precocious kids, who after four or more years of the project have grown a little and are now even beginning to discuss their post school futures.

“Doubtless influenced by everything they've enjoyed, having had access to the museums, galleries, libraries and wider cultural and arts experience of Hull.

“This book sees the intrepid duo invited to look around the Maritime building as guests, to see the refurbishment in progress, looking at objects as they return and discovering new experiences the public will be able to enjoy when it reopens. I'm already looking forward to their next outing."

Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said: “The Maritime Tales comic series is a brilliant way to engage people of all ages with Hull’s maritime heritage.

“It’s fantastic to see Lily and Jacob exploring the museum as it undergoes its exciting transformation.

“This creative approach helps bring history to life and builds anticipation for the reopening of the Maritime Museum, which will be a key part of our city’s cultural future.”
