My name is Ian Martin and I am one of Hull Maritime Tour Guides.

This is the strangely named Thuntank 5 built at Google 1969/70. Most of the crew were from Hull including me.

We were based in Gothenburg Sweden and carried fuel oil to ports all over the Baltic including the Swedish island of Goteland.

We also travelled up the Norwegian Fjords to obscure little towns to replenish their oil fired boilers.

She was a terrible sea ship and would take on water even in the slightest swell. Once we got further into the Baltic you can see from the photo how she used to ice up and we had to go out on deck to chop the ice off.

In some ports we had to rely upon the ice breaker to get us to the Quayside.

I spent nearly the whole winter on her and did numerous voyages including trips to Denmark which gave the crew some relief with nights ashore in Aalborg & Aarhus.
