On 15 January, the Hull Maritime Community Grant Scheme, in which we will award small pots of up to £1,000 to local groups and individuals, will reopen for applications. In this blog series, Emma Smith asks successful grantees from the last round of funding to share their experiences, highlights, and top tips on applying for a grant. Here she chats to Frankie from Mambo Jambo.

Hello Frankie, please can you tell us a bit about you?

We're Mambo Jambo, musicians and workshop & project leaders. We work with lots of different members of different communities and schools etc.

You were successful in the second round of community grants. What did you do for your project?

We made a podcast as a result of having sessions with students at Ron Dearing UTC college and talking to someone who worked on the River Humber plus a local playwright, Rupert Creed. (And artist Andy Pea helped us facilitate the broadcast of the podcast on West Hull Community radio, plus it can be accessed from our website: www.mambojambo.co.uk)

Brilliant! What did the funding from Hull Maritime enable you to do?

It allowed us to try new things, to learn things and to work with some new people and young people that turned out to be really inspiring, for all involved!

If you had to pick, what was the best thing about the project?

The best thing was the fact that the students we were working with at Ron Dearing were really engaged and inquisitive; they were keen to ask more, learn more and discuss the topics, and that our project took a new extra turning that we hadn't anticipated as a result of one of their suggestions.

What’s one tip you would give to something thinking to apply to Round Three?

To think about making your project as engaging as possible.

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences of Hull Maritime’s Community Grant Scheme with us!
