Nova is working with two of the region’s brightest up and coming filmmakers in the latest stage of the digital and creative skills programme with Hull Maritime.

Back in October, Ben, 24, and Suda, 21, came on board to take part in the latest instalment of the project, which has so far covered workshops in writing, illustration and painting led by some of Hull’s leading creatives.

Using passages created in the writing workshops as inspiration, the pair were each tasked with creating a short film from concept right through to postproduction.

From the off it was clear Nova were going to enjoy working with Ben and Suda.

“What stood out straight away was how enthusiastic and articulate they both were,” said Matt Stephenson, Director at Nova Studios.

“We spent the first morning at Juice Studios, discussing the work we were using from the writing group and considering how best to reflect the ideas visually.

“They came up with some really creative approaches and I really think that comes out in their final films.”

The workshop took place over three consecutive days, with each day led by a different member of the Nova team.

Day two saw our videographer Callum join Suda and Ben on a mammoth day of shooting - starting in Hull city centre through to the banks of the Humber and as far as the river Hull’s industrial backdrop in Wincolmlee.

And it all came together back at Nova HQ on day 3.

Nova's full-time editor Lina took the reins as Ben and Suda moved their work through post-production.

“It’s quite a challenge to get through the full editing process in one day but I think they’ve both come out with something really nice.

“I really like the way they’ve represented the words through their choice of imagery. I always like it when people create work representing their city and think they’ve both done it beautifully.”

This creative programme is part of the £30.3m Hull Maritime project, funded by Hull City Council and The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Elements involve the refurbishment of the Hull Maritime Museum, restoration of the Spurn Lightship and the Arctic Corsair and regenerating the North End Shipyard, a hidden gem along the River Hull.
