Here at the Hull Maritime office we recently have had the pleasure of hosting a work placement student from The Boulevard Academy. Here is the blog from Chesus who joined us for two days to find out what our engagement team get up to!

Day 1

When I got on the stagecoach bus I arrived at the Pacific Exchange, and it was a wonder. As I got in I got introduced to Chris, my main work experience guide, he took me out and gave me a wonderful tour about Hull’s Maritime History.

I’ve only studied a bit of its history, about Lily Bilocca and how it was a dangerous and brave job that she protested for against as many men die due to the conductions. Later on, we went back to the placement and introduced me to the wonders of VR, giving me the reality and experience of how tragic it was out there in the dark, cold sea.

After my VR experience, we once again went out, because the weather was lovely, and I helped him with his job sorting resources after a family workshop. Next, we brought Emma, the community engagement officer, as Chris promised me that I can have a feel of the maritime historic tools and items, Emma couldn’t wait as she jumped out her seat instantly.

He gave me a choice to pick 3 items of the past and research about its history for later use on their social media on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Day 2

I got on the bus once more and went back to Pacific Exchange, Update on the Weather: it wasn’t great. So, I got there earlier to shield myself from the spitting rain. As I got there, I went back to my desk to finish off my previous work. Once that was done, I got asked to research about trawlers, a trawler is a fishing vessel and they still exist to this day. They’ve been used to, well, fish, one of Hull’s most famous trawlers is the Arctic Corsair, which was famous for capturing the most cod and haddock.

12pm, Lunch Time! As the weather was still spitting rain I had to had my lunch inside the placement, food was still amazing. Next, we had a meeting with Anna, about marketing the project which I can’t tell to the public as it’s confidential.
