Get on board and have some maritime fun during the summer holidays.

Festival of archaeology is back!

On Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 July, 10am-3pm, over at the site of the South Blockhouse on Tower Street, you can get creative and help tell the amazing story of Tudor Hull.

You will have the opportunity to handle real artefacts from the site and talk to archaeologists to discover the stories behind the South Blockhouse and learn more about Hull’s maritime past and discover what it was like to navigate the Humber Estuary in Tudor times.

Most events are free and drop-in, no booking needed.

Boat Building Challenge
8 August, 1 – 3pm at Hull and East Riding Museum Education Room
Come along to Hull and East Riding Museum and take part in our challenge to design and make your own boat. With prizes be won for the boats that can hold the most weight, will your boat sink or float? Recommended ages: 4+.

Summer Parks roadshow
9 August, 11am – 3pm at Alderman Kneeshaw Park
There will be maritime themed craft activities and fascinating objects from our collection for you to get hands-on.

Safety at Sea
10 August, 1 – 3pm at Streetlife Museum Education Room
Lighthouses have been keeping our ships safe for hundreds of years but how do they work? Come down to Street life Museum and try and build a working lighthouse out of paper and a simple electric circuit. Also, discover and try on the clothes and equipment that keep our sailors safe and warm on the often treacherous sea! Recommended ages: 7+.

Paper Whales
15 August, 1 – 3pm at Hull and East Riding Museum Education Room
Come and meet a Hull whaler and discover why this dangerous occupation came to an end by exploring and getting hands-on objects related to whaling. Have a go at the art of paper folding and make yourself a paper whale, Polar bear or boat. Recommended ages: 4+.

Arctic Art
16 August, 1 – 3pm at Ferens Art Gallery Studio
Whalers, fishermen and explorers from Hull have travelled all across the incredible freezing Arctic. Filled with amazing creatures, this environment is sadly now under threat from climate change. Come and get crafty at Ferens Studio to find out more about Arctic wildlife and help us make our own collaborative mini masterpiece! Recommended for all ages.

Luminous Lighthouse workshop
18 August, 10am – 12noon and 1 – 3pm at Central Library
Create your own working lighthouse model complete with a snazzy colour changing light. Stick it together from our pre-made laser cut kits and then decorate as you like! The lighthouse model requires some patience to put together, so this activity is suitable for older children. Suggested Age 8+. Tickets cost £3. Book your place here.
