Hull Maritime has launched a new South Blockhouse Creative Communities Grant Scheme.
The
scheme is designed to engage residents by exploring the story of the South
Blockhouse through a creative project delivered by a community group or
freelancer.
Small
grants of up to £3,000 will be awarded to successful groups, organisations and
creative freelancers for activities that will engage with communities in Hull.
The projects will explore the history of the South Blockhouse in some way, such
as focusing on Henry VIII, archaeology, defending the city, Hull’s rebellious
reputation and relationship with royalty or the iconic cloverleaf design of the
South Blockhouse.
Councillor
Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said: “The South Blockhouse is an
untold story for many. This community grant scheme is an opportunity for people
to learn more about the nationally significant monument and the many stories
related to it in a variety of ways delivered by the community for the
community.”
The South Blockhouse, close to The Deep, is a
nationally significant monument, part of a scheme fortifications on the east
bank of the river Hull, constructed on the orders of Henry VIII between 1541-43
in support of his military campaigns. It was built to protect Hull’s eastern
side and house guns and protect the gunners and ammunition from attack.

The deadline for applications is 10pm on Friday 2 August 2024.
