Hull City Council has confirmed the appointment of LDA Design Consulting Ltd to support the delivery of upcoming improvements to three key city centre locations.

The initiative, aimed at enhancing Princes Dock Street, Humber Dock Street, and High Street (from Blackfriargate to Liberty Lane), marks a significant step in Hull's ongoing efforts to revitalise its urban landscape.

LDA Design Consulting Ltd, renowned for its expertise in urban design and public realm projects, will facilitate the creation of vibrant, welcoming spaces that will not only enhance the city centre’s aesthetic appeal but also improve functionality and accessibility for both residents and visitors.

The project will deliver a wide range of enhancements, including:

  • High-quality public realm: Creating spaces for pedestrians and cyclists that align with current standards and best practices, consistent with ongoing investments in Hull’s city centre.
  • Attractive and flexible public spaces: Developing areas that are safe, inviting, and versatile, encouraging extended visits and supporting various public events. New green spaces including a ‘linear park’ and family friendly play elements will also be part of the improvements.
  • Heritage and art integration: Improving heritage interpretation and incorporating public art to celebrate Hull’s rich history.
  • Vehicular management: Providing protection of the public realm from unauthorized motor vehicle access and enhancing overall traffic management.
  • Street enhancements: Reducing street clutter and introducing improved street furniture, lighting, seating, and incidental play areas.
  • Improved signage and wayfinding: Enhancing pedestrian information displays to make navigation easier and more intuitive.

LDA Design Consulting Ltd have already led the initial design phase and will now focus on developing and implementing detailed, high-quality designs that will bring the vision for these key streets to life. The improvements are part of a new maritime trail, which aims to enrich Hull’s cultural and historical offerings.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, Portfolio Holder for Transportation, Roads and Highways, commented: "We are excited to partner with LDA Design on this transformative project. These improvements are vital for the continued growth and development of Hull’s city centre, ensuring that it remains a vibrant, welcoming, and accessible space for everyone."

The project is jointly funded by National Highways and Hull City Council, with improvement works expected to begin later this year and continue through to autumn 2025.
