A new exhibition celebrating the creativity and talents of Hull’s young people and community groups is set to open at the Pier Street – SPACE Pop-up in the Fruit Market on Hull Marina from Saturday 9 August to Thursday 21 August.

The exhibition has been curated by Square Peg, a Hull-based community arts organisation known for its inclusive and community-driven approach to the arts and is the culmination of a year-long collaboration involving six local secondary schools and a range of community organisations.

Students aged 11 and over from Tweendykes School and Sixth Form, Boulevard Academy, Felix House School, Sirius Academy North, The Hub School, and Ron Dearing UTC have explored the rich heritage of the South Blockhouse and broader historical themes including “Hull 1540s to 1860s” and “Defending Hull.” Their discoveries have been brought to life through a variety of creative media including 3D modelling, murals, drama, photography and textile work.

In addition to the school-led projects, local artists and community groups have contributed their own imaginative responses through Creative Communities grant-funded initiatives and Creative Taster Workshops, offering a dynamic and intergenerational perspective on Hull’s history. Hull residents and community groups including Brainkind, the 'Got Something to Say' disabled artists group, Hull Scrapstore, Matthew's Hub, Rooted in Hull, Sight Support Kids, The Special Stars Foundation and We Made This Hull have had the opportunity to create diverse and engaging artworks in a range of mediums with local artists including Fiona Caley, Helen Gill, Lauren Saunders and Square Peg Hull.

Councillor Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, said: "This exhibition is a fantastic example of how our heritage can inspire creativity and bring people together. Thanks to funding from Hull Maritime and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, students and community members have had the opportunity to engage in meaningful creative work that celebrates Hull’s unique past."

The South Blockhouse project has been an incredible opportunity for our students to creatively explore Hull's history and heritage. The exhibition is exciting because it will show a celebration of talent, resilience, voice and the city we call home.

Andy Wilson, Teacher at Sirius Academy North, said:Being part of the South Blockhouse project made me feel connected to Hull in a way I never have before. Learning about the blitz and how much the city has overcome made me feel proud to represent that in our performance.”

Annabelle Hill, student at Sirius Academy North, said: “It's not just a project, it's about showing everyone what young people can do. Seeing our work come together and showcasing it is an amazing feeling!”

Victoria Smithson, Headteacher at Felix House School, said: “At Felix House School, we are incredibly proud of the collaborative project we’ve developed alongside the inspirational team at Square Peg Hull, a socially engaged arts organisation committed to using creativity as a tool for inclusion, empowerment, and change. Their work focuses on amplifying the voices of those who often feel unheard, and their approach aligns beautifully with our school’s ethos.

“This partnership has created something truly special, an opportunity for our children to express themselves beyond the traditional boundaries of art, design, and culture. Through this work, our pupils have built self-esteem, developed confidence, and discovered the power of teamwork and creative risk taking.

“This project is a reflection of what happens when education, community, and creativity come together, and we are just getting started.”

The exhibition is free to attend and promises to be a celebration of Hull’s heritage, as seen through the eyes of the next generation and the wider community.
