25th July 2019
Mike Fell OBE met with trustees from the Hull Maritime Foundation at The Guildhall earlier today (Thursday 25 July), to present a cheque of £736.34.
This generous donation to the Hull Maritime Foundation is the third to have been made by a member of the public since May 2019.
All funding secured by the foundation supports the Hull: Yorkshire's Maritime City project by enabling it to achieve its ambitious goals. This includes advancing education in the subject matters of maritime and seafaring history, natural sciences in the marine environment and the arts in Hull.
Mike, a former Associated British Ports Port Director in Hull, generously donated the royalties he has earned to date from the sale of his book, An Illustrated History of the Port of Hull and its Railways. The book was launched in June 2018 in the Court Room of the Hull Maritime Museum and earlier this year was acclaimed as the Popular Transport Book of the Year 2019 by the Railway and Canal Historical Society.
Speaking about his donation, Mike said: “I am delighted to present this cheque today to the Hull Maritime Foundation and hope that it goes from strength to strength. Hull’s maritime past is indeed the foundation of the city’s success and it is important that our heritage is preserved and understood. I hope my book will assist in achieving that aim.”
Lord Haskins, Chair of Hull Maritime Foundation, said: “On behalf of the foundation I would like to thank Mike for his kind donation. I am delighted that Mike’s book has been so successful and received an award. All donations like this are extremely important as they enable us to continue to support the ambitious maritime project reach its funding gap and enable the project to come to fruition.”
The Hull Maritime Foundation was established in 2018 with the purpose of supporting the Hull: Yorkshire’s Maritime City project. Recently, the foundation announced that it would launch a Patrons' Programme. This allows those who are passionate about Hull's maritime history to get closer to it and also supports the project.
